INTRODUCTION TO 2014 SEASON FROM NRU CEO
The Northland Rugby Union stretches from Wellsford in the South to our most Northern Club Ngati Kuri just south of Cape Reinga. This forces the NRRA to schedule referee meetings at central venues throughout Northland. For these area meeting schedules, please ask your coach/area co-ordinator when these are.
Attendances of referee meetings are vital as it as these meetings that important referee techniques/information is shared by experienced referees and coaches. These meetings will provide you with the base of which to launch your own style of refereeing.
A sound knowledge of the IRB: Laws of the game – Rugby Union. This can be learnt, a law book will be provided to all new referees. This book MUST be read on a regular basis to truly gain an understanding of the laws of rugby.
The NRRA appoints its referees to all games in Northland from U14 upwards, with games below this level being used to train new referees. These are completed by an appointments committee on a weekly basis and are distributed by the Referee Administrator via email. It is crucial that as a referee you make the Referee Administrator aware of when you are UNAVAILABLE otherwise you will be appointed.
New members will be provided with all gear to referee in (except footwear), this gear MUST be worn at all times while refereeing due to sponsorship requirements. Please fill out the gear allocation form as soon as possible to allow gear to be distributed in a timely fashion.
